Tips to turn your Internship into Successful Career
July 27, 2018
Regardless of whether you a paid intern or working for free to pick up the ropes, you should give it your all. Companies look for interns who are “go getters” and display strong work ethics, commitment to whatever they are entrusted with, dependable and a team person. HR Managers often look for these qualities when they hire full time employees and hence if you as an intern have these traits in you, it is likely that you might just be able to turn your internship into a successful career in the same organisation.
Here are some tips that you will do well to follow during your internship, keeping the larger picture of your career in mind.
Develop cordial relationships
Develop excellent communication skills and be cordial with all. Your colleagues and supervisors might be too busy to notice that there is a new member in their organisation. It is therefore advisable to introduce yourself and show a positive and friendly attitude, right from the janitor up.
Set Personal targets
Set goals and objectives that you want to reach during your internship period. Keep in touch with your supervisor for things to do and keep yourself always busy. This is a hands-on learning period and you should take full advantage of it. If you have completed a project ask for another one or read company journals and professional literature. Check the display brochure holders that have brochures detailing company’s products and services. Make sure that you pick up the necessary skill sets that employers look for when they hire full-time personnel.
Be curious, ask questions
Do not hesitate to ask questions on anything that you do not understand. Companies that take on interns expect this and your supervisor will not feel upset about it. Basically, as a student, you are not supposed to have on-job knowledge and your supervisor will be aware of it. There are two sides to being curious and asking questions. First, internship is for going through a practical learning experience and hence more the questions that you ask, the more will you sharpen your skill sets. Second, employers believe that students who are curious and ask questions are motivated and really want to learn as much as they can about the industry.
Finally, have a positive attitude to everything. You might be asked to make a cup of coffee once in a while but do not allow this to upset you and take your mind off the larger picture. However, if it becomes a daily routine, talk to your supervisor about it.
These are some of the ways that you can turn your internship into a successful career.
